Consequently there are a lot of water birds with great wetlands near the start along the Moyne River. Initially it is a smooth bitumen track but declines later to a rougher surface that can be a bit tricky if it is wet. Around Toolong Road there can be lots of White-faced Herons with long stretches of drainage ditches and Ibis are also common

There are several slippery timber bridges, so reduce speed on approach. Nice clumps of trees along the way – worth pausing to check for birds, in particular the Moyne and Kirkstall station sites. Rosebank station has an old quarry with water which is worth checking – but ignore the rubbish! The open country in parts can be windy. Worth spending time at the old stations sites with big old trees – see trail notes.

New planting along the trail

[mapsmarker map=”4″]

Start point: Port Fairy, Regent Street at old Railway Station – Directions Distance: 18km (36km return) Track: Good – smooth bitumen and compacted gravel.
